Why Cannes Is Going Mainstream (Cannes),

Carey Mulligan, Ryan Gosling
Cannes Film Festival
"Drive"

Commercial fare such as "Drive" and Paul W.S. Anderson’s "Pompeii" project dominate festival and market lineups.

Amid all the talk of the auteurs, cultural imperatives and sniffy attitudes toward U.S. studio fare, this year’s Marche du Film will be dominated by one dirty word and all its forms: commercial, commerciality, commercialism, comme toujours.

As the movie industry survivors -- from the studios and affiliates to low down and dirty independents -- emerge blinking into a much-changed landscape after three years shaped by economic turmoil, the banking crisis and narrowed business opportunities, the need for a clever commercial bent is more essential than ever.

Anecdotal evidence certainly suggests that there are two strands of projects on the auction floor on the eve of the market. On the one hand are the $100 million plus packages such as Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on the story of Pompeii complete with a hefty price tag being asked by Summit International this week across international territories, or Ender’s Game, a live-action sci-fi movie based on the novel by Orson Scott Carr to be directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and being sold in Cannes by Sierra/Affinity. And Focus Features Intl. is selling the $100 million budgeted Cloud Atlas, starring Tom Hanks.

On the other hand are the myriad projects with cast at budgets of $30 million or lower. Projects at this level, starring A-listers such as Meryl Streep, Robert Downey Jr. or Jason Statham, feature heavily along the Croisette.

“There’s nothing in between the two at the moment,” says Lionsgate U.K. chief Zygi Kamasa, who lands in Cannes wearing both a buyers hat and a production financier badge. “It’s because if you buy something with a budget above say $30 million and below $100 million and they fail then simply everyone loses their shirt. At the high end, everyone is gambling on whether or not those projects might be the next big franchise.”

“The whole market has become very polarized,” agrees Summit International exec David Garrett. “Because of the decline of the DVD market and the TV sales market, more and more is concentrated on generating revenue out of theatrical sales, which leads to a greater focus on bigger titles.”

There will certainly be no shortage of high-end product in Cannes 2011, from FilmNation’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Julia Roberts to IM Global’s Jason Statham actioner Parker to the thriller Better Living Through Chemistry with Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Garner from Ealing Metro to Cry Macho, the kidnapping drama which has Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star, marking his return to the big screen, and which QED International is bringing to the party.

“There’s a lot more mainstream product around this year,” says Bernhard zu Castell, managing director of German distributor Universum Films. “It’s often the case that everyone is chasing the same films, but this year there might almost be enough to go around.”

Even in Cannes' Competition lineup, a haven for the auteur and obscure, there are several titles which could turn up at a multiplex near you — such as Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn or Drive from Nicolas Winding Refn, a crime thriller featuring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Christina Hendricks.

With the crossover success of The King’s Speech and Black Swan last year, buyers will also have an eye out for titles that look art house but can play blockbuster.

“We are interested in commercial art house films, commercial specialist films and out and out commercial films. They don’t always have to carry a $100 million budget price tag,” says Ealing Metro topper Will Machin, citing Ealing’s new title, a Nina Simone biopic starring Mary J. Blige, as an example of a film that can be both commercial art house and specialist movie in one.

“The question is whether there still is a market for full-on art house, or will all the cash in Cannes flow toward the mainstream?

“Smaller, more indie films are definitely more of a challenge,” says Julie Sultan, head of sales at new U.S. sales/acquisitions/financing group W2 Media. “With the downturn in the economy, the bigger pictures are more alluring. A lot of indie buyers worldwide are looking to step up and reach for these bigger films that can compete with the studio pictures.”

But others say reports of the death of art house have been greatly exaggerated.

“People have been saying that since Little Miss Sunshine and Garden State and Hustle and Flow,” said one major U.S. sales agent, dismissively. “The reality is, Blue Valentine got made, and that’s more of an art film.”

Tom Bernard of Sony Classics, a Cannes veteran, also thinks that whatever the economic pressure toward sure-bet movies, the Marche du Film is still the place to mine arthouse gems.

“We got Secret in Their Eyes two years ago out of the market, and for the specialized business it did $8 million," he said. "In a Better World we got in the market, it won the Academy Award. Every year there’s good movies there. If you’re looking for a studio blockbuster (Cannes) probably not the place to look.”

'House' Renewed for Eighth Season,

House

The pickup comes on the heels of renewals for "Family Guy" and its spinoff "The Cleveland Show."

Dr. House will be on call for another season.

Fox on Tuesday announced an eighth season pickup for the Hugh Laurie medical drama, confirming widespread speculation.

“Over the past seven seasons, House has redefined the medical drama and has given us one of television’s most compelling and iconic characters,” said Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly. “From the producers to the incredible writers to the unbelievably talented cast and crew, the House team is fearless in its creativity and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next year.”

The announcement follows protracted negotiations between the show’s studio Universal Media Studios and network Fox over the show’s license fee, which spilled out into the press. At issue: who will pay what percentage for an eighth season.

Fox was looking to shave the license fee for the aging show as much as 20 percent, even as production costs rise, sources tells The Hollywood Reporter. Meantime, UMS had hoped to squeeze more seasons out of the deal, but Fox held tight with only one —and likely final -- season for the show.

Though it has shed viewers of late, House remains one of Fox’s top scripted programs and has long proved a powerhouse internationally and grossed in the neighborhood of $1 billion over its seven season run, according to some estimates.

Looking to the fall, Fox could pick up its Lauren Ambrose pilot Weekends at Bellevue, another hospital drama that could work as a complement – and eventual replacement — for House. The network, which recently renewed Family Guy and its spinoff The Cleveland Show, will reveal its 2011-12 schedule next week during its upfront presentation in New York

How 3D Is Fueling the International Box Office,

Kung Fu Panda 2 Film Still
DreamWorks Animation
"Kung Fu Panda 2"

Titles like "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Pirates 4" aim to capitalize on the popularity of the technology, which helped international grosses climb 30% over the past five years.

Avatar led the way. As it made its worldwide tout in 2010, James Cameron’s visionary movie proved just how big a draw a 3D movie could become. Breaking all records, its international grosses of $2 billion more than doubled its domestic take of $760.5 million.

Then, right in its tracks, came the double whammy of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Pixar’s Toy Story 3, two more examples of eye-popping 3D eye-candy, which amassed more than $1 billion each at the worldwide boxoffice.

And, just weeks ago, Rio picked up the baton. The South American-set animated tale has to date nearly tripled its domestic take of $115.2 million in international markets where it has collected more than $292.3 million.

“3D grosses are driving the boxoffice,” NATO president John Fithian proclaimed at this springs’ CinemaCon gathering of exhibitors from around the world in Las Vegas.

Over the past five years, global box office receipts have climbed 30% to a record-high of $31.8 billion, while the domestic portion of that tally has increased by 15%. And during the past year, 3D and a hot Asia-Pacific market were the two chief factors that powered those international numbers. In many territories, ticket sales may have been flat, but increased surcharges on 3D admissions made up the difference — and then some.

“2010 was certainly the year when 3D had a major impact on box office, with eight of the top 15 international titles (presented) in 3D,” Andrew Cripps, president of Paramount Pictures International, told The Hollywood Reporter in a review of the past year. And this year, that trend shows every promise of accelerating.

According to the MPAA, there are 34 3D movies scheduled for 2011, compared to 25 last year. And just as the promise of increased revenues from 3D has driven theaters to convert to digital projection in the U.S., the same process is now taking place abroad.

As of March, the U.S. boasted 16,231 digital screens, with 8,963 of them equipped for 3D. Abroad, the number of digital screens stood at 23,511, with 17,059 offering 3D. Those numbers are increasing by the week. China alone is adding roughly three screens a day, all digital, which means they can be easily converted to 3D.

The Cannes Film Festival has played its part in heralding the new age of 3D. Two years ago, Pixar’s Up became the first 3D movie to ever open the festival. And this year, another Disney entry, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is scheduled to sail into port Saturday night as festival-goers don their 3D glasses to watch Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow search for the fountain of youth.

“We were pioneers in a sense, because we were the first live-action film to really bring these delicate cameras and all these rigs and things into remote locations,” the movie’s director Rob Marshall says. “We brought 3D equipment into jungles and caves and waterfalls and beaches and ships. I still can’t decide if we were insane or we were pioneers. But we did it and I’m really proud of that fact.”

Although not part of this year’s festival proper, DreamWorks Animation will also be in Cannes, showing off its latest 3D wares — Kung Fu Panda 2 and the upcoming Puss in Boots — to the captive audience of international journalists here.

And throughout the market, 3D projects are popping up everywhere. Nu Image is handling international sales for production partner Lionsgate’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, which starts production next month. Arclight is ramping up William Tell: 3D, starring Brendan Fraser, for a shoot this fall in Europe.

IM Global’s dance card includes the BBC Earth Film’s African wildlife documentary Enchanted Kingdom 3D. The Weinstein Co. has a second 3D Piranha feature — officially dubbed Piranha 3DD — currently before the cameras. And smaller indie filmmakers are getting into the act as well — P.J. Petiette, for example, will offer the world premiere of his dark comedy Julia X 3D, which is being sold by Dixie Theatrical Corp., a new international sales company.

So hang onto those 3D glasses — to rework Al Jolsen’s line about the arrival of the talkies, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Ethan Hawke Joins 'Total Recall' Remake (Exclusive),

Ethan Hawke is boarding Total Recall, Columbia’s Colin Farrell-starring remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie.

The original movie, based on the Philip K. Dick story, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, followed a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The movie has been casting up ahead of its June start in Toronto with Bryan Cranston playing the villain. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads.

Hawke’s role is being kept secret and it is cameo in nature.

The CAA-repped actor recently shot the Fox pilot Exit Strategy.

Priyanka gets animated for Environmental awareness,

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has become a part of the NDTV Greenathon initiative, which creates awareness about the environment. Piggy Chops is all set to appear in the animated music video for this initiative. This will be the first time when Priyanka will make an appearance in music video. Shankar Ehsaan and Loy, are composing the music for this video. A source says, “The idea of the video was not to be preachy, and force their views upon others but to be entertaining and light.”

Describing the concept further, the source says, “As the center of the campaign, Priyanka is depicted as being in a surreal space, a polluted, dry, barren landscape. She is in despair, looking for a solution. Just then, she sees a green sapling sprouting out of the cracked earth. She hands it to a little girl, an angel who runs into real world and hands the sapling to a bunch of ordinary, carefree young people.”

When asked Priyanka about her experience she said, “It was quite challenging because I was working with a chroma screen, I had to visualize the positioning of everything in my mind and act it out accordingly. The good part was that the NDTV team had a storyboard in place, which allowed me to visualize what I had to do, more easily. It was a first for me.”

Lady Gaga Teams With Zynga to Promote 'Born This Way',

Born This Way
Lady Gaga

The collaboration includes a Gaga-inspired farm in FarmVille, first listens of new songs from the upcoming release and downloads of the album and exclusive bonus tracks for people buying a $25 Zynga game card at Best Buy.

NEW YORK -- Lady Gaga has teamed up with social gaming giant Zynga to promote and celebrate her new album Born This Way ahead of its May 23 launch.

The multi-pronged collaboration will allow little monsters across the world to interact with a Lady Gaga-inspired farm in Zynga game FarmVille, get a first listen to new songs from the pop icon's upcoming album -- via music streams, powered by radio giant Clear Channel's digital radio service iHeartRadio, that can be unlocked in the game -- and a download of the album plus exclusive bonus tracks when buying a $25 Zynga game card, which allows players to buy in-game items, at Best Buy. Players can also get limited-edition Gaga items on Zynga's RewardVille and will get Gaga-themed words of the day in mobile phone game Words With Friends.

The FarmVille farm inspired by the pop icon will be dubbed GagaVille and feature such things as crystals, unicorns and sheep on motorcycles. Purchasers of the Best Buy cards, available in the U.S. and Canada, also get an exclusive Lady Gaga unicorn in FarmVille and get a chance to be one of seven winners who will get to spend a day on the set of the star's next video shoot.

The Lady Gaga program, which launches May 17, marks the first time Zynga has partnered with a global pop icon or an entertainment release across different games and platforms at the same time. Financial details weren't disclosed.

“I want to celebrate and share Born This Way with my little monsters in a special way that’s never been done before,” Lady Gaga said. “Zynga has created a magical place in FarmVille where my fans can come play and be the first to listen to the album.”

Zynga and Gaga had teamed this year to raise more than $3 million for relief efforts in Japan.

Meanwhile, the Lady Gaga integration marks the first time that Clear Channel has partnered with a social gaming firm. The radio giant's relationship with Zynga will be promoted across Clear Channel stations and on iHeartRadio. In addition, Lady Gaga will announce codes that unlock exclusive Gaga-inspired limited-edition virtual items on 148 Clear Channel stations May 17, including New York’s Z100 and L.A.’s KIIS-FM

"We're inventing new ways for fans and players to celebrate Lady Gaga's new album and do so in the way that reflects the album's focus on self-expression and positivity," said Raquel Di Sabatino, director of entertainment and media at Zynga. She didn't disclose financial terms.
"Lady Gaga is an innovative force in pop culture and has been revolutionizing the industry, including in the way she connects with her fans," she said. "And she is as passionate about her fans as we are about our players."

The Gaga effort comes as Zynga continues its entertainment push after a recent deal with Viacom's Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies to promote the theatrical release of Rango.

In the film space, its first deal featured DreamWorks Animations' Megamind in a partnership that saw the animated film's protagonist launch a "Mega-Farm" within Zynga's flagship game FarmVille for a day. Zynga then placed Sony Pictures Entertainment's The Green Hornet inside its Mafia Wars game.

On the TV side, Time Warner's TNT did a Southland integration with Mafia Wars in late December.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lady-gaga-teams-zynga-promote-187108

And early last year, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Zynga partnered for a Mafia Wars campaign in support of the Blu-ray and DVD release of Public Enemies.

Music has also increasingly been on Zynga's radar, and it has had a successful partnership with Dr. Dre for Mafia Wars that allowed players to watch the music video for the rapper-producer's first single from his album Detox, among other things to promote the album.

And last August, Snoop Dogg and Mafia Wars blew up a four-ton armored truck in celebration of 10 million visitors to Mafia Wars Las Vegas, with more than 2 million views of the live stream.

Clear Channel, on its part, has increasingly looked to Facebook and other online ways to engage its listeners. “Partnering with Zynga to provide this incredible immersive music experience within FarmVille is another clear indication that Clear Channel is adding the social element to radio in ways no other company can,” said Bob Pittman, chairman of media and entertainment platforms at Clear Channel. “Radio has been Lady Gaga’s virtual stage from the very beginning, enabling fans to connect with her 24x7, and this is another extension of that stage.

More than 250 million people play Zynga games every month on social networks, particularly on Facebook, with FarmVille attracting 46 million a month

'Mars Needs Moms' Hurts Disney as Quarterly Profit Drops 1%,

Mars Needs Moms (2011)
Walt Disney
"Mars Needs Moms"

UPDATED: The poor performance of the animated film contributed to the profit fall, despite rising revenue.

The poor performance of Mars Needs Moms helped contribute to a 1 percent profit decrease at Disney in its fiscal second quarter, despite rising revenue, the company said Tuesday.

Disney reported net income of $942 million on revenue that grew 6% to $9.1 billion.

Its largest segment, media networks, was the standout performer, with operating income that grew 17 percent to $1.5 billion on revenue that was up 12 percent to $4.3 billion.

Its weak link was the film studio, which reported operating income that shrunk 65 percent to $77 million on revenue that was off 13 percent to $1.3 billion.

Beyond Mars Needs Moms, which took in $37 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, Disney blamed weakness at the studio on difficult comparisons. A year ago, after all, Alice in Wonderland was in worldwide theatrical release, and Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were selling well on DVD and Blu-ray disc.

The other three segments -- parks and resorts, consumer products and interactive media -- each saw some revenue growth. Parks and resorts, though, reported a 3 percent decline in operating income to $145 million, and interactive lost $115 million compared with a loss of $55 million a year ago.

Disney shares rose 2 percent ahead of its earnings report to $43.91 but were off as much as 3 percent in after-hours trading as Wall Street determined the results fell short of expectations.

Zacks Investment Research, in fact, said "the entertainment behemoth posted a horror flick on earnings."

Arjun Rampal a part of public awareness ad,

Arjun Rampal

Arjun Rampal

Arjun Rampal will be soon seen in a public awareness campaign, which is based on human trafficking. The actor completed the shoot of this ad, a couple of days back. Kunal Vohra of Altair Films directed this commercial. Â In a few days, this ad will be broadcasted on all the channels. Kunal explains the concept of the ad film, “The idea was to draw parallels between commodities and human beings and say that they are not the same. I went to Arjun with the concept and he quiet liked it. He was kicked about being a part of it. We shot the ad in his house. Despite his commitments, he managed to take some time out.”

Arjun also studied the topic and facts about human (especially girl child) trafficking before shooting the ad. Kunall says, “I briefed him about the statistics and the growing rate of child trafficking in our metros. He was not only alarmed but also shocked.

Joel Silver Wins Round One In Goldman Sachs Lawsuit ,

Producer Joel Silver has won the first round in his bold lawsuit against Goldman Sachs over a series of financial arrangements related to his Dark Castle genre film company.

Federal judge Ronald Lew today denied Goldman's motion to dismiss Silver's multi-faceted case against the investment bank for breach of contract, fraud and other causes of action. The powerhouse producer behind the Matrix films and Die Hard sued in December claiming Goldman orally agreed (and then followed up in written correspondence) to pay him $30 million in exchange for a share of revenue from films made by Dark Castle, the Warner Bros.-based division of his Silver Pictures. Silver claims he helped Goldman arrange another deal and was promised a big deal of his own. Full background on the case here.

Goldman later fired back at Silver, calling the suit "implausible" and "absurd." The investment bank's attorneys at David Boies' firm then filed a motion to dismiss the complaint, arguing, among other things, that any agreement with Goldman would have been extensively documented in writing.

But Judge Lew today denied the effort to toss the case at the procedural stage, pleasing Silver attorney Bert Fields.

"My client had a deal with Goldman and Goldman welched on their deal," Fields tells us. "It's as simple as that. Goldman agreed to pay him a lot of money and welched."

We've reached out to Goldman attorney Fred Norton and will update if he responds.

No trial date has been set in the case. Both sides will begin gathering evidence, with the next step likely being summary judgment motions.
